Amazon is getting ready to put $1.3 billion into France and make 3,000 new jobs for people there.

Amazon, known as AMZN.O, announced on Monday that it's putting over 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) into its operations in France and bringing in over 3,000 new permanent jobs.

The French presidency had revealed on Sunday that Amazon, along with other companies like GSK (GSK.L) and Accenture (ACN.N), would be unveiling investments worth billions during the country's yearly "Choose France" event, starting on Monday.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to boost its cloud infrastructure in the Paris area to capitalize on France's growing generative AI sector. Additionally, it will enhance logistics infrastructure in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, according to the company's statement.

The rising popularity of generative AI, or GenAI, has been driving the demand for cloud services, and France has emerged as a focal point for AI innovation, boasting promising startups like Mistral and Poolside. Major players like Meta and Google have also established AI research centers in the country.

Since 2010, Amazon has poured over 20 billion euros into its operations in France and currently has over 22,000 permanent employees working in its cloud and online retail divisions.

Frédéric Duval, the country manager at Amazon France, emphasized that these new jobs are on top of the 2,000 positions previously announced for 2024.

Additionally, a portion of the investment will go towards expanding its logistics network to accelerate delivery times and minimize carbon emissions. Amazon already operates more than 35 logistics facilities throughout France.
